Climate Research Unit (CRU) Implementation
To carry out the research project, Agricultural Decision-making and Adaptation to the Precipitation Trends in Sri Lanka (ADAPT-SL), both National Building Research Organization (NBRO), Sri Lanka, and Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Energy and Environment (VIEE; USA) have agreed to establish a Climate Research Unit (CRU) in Sri Lanka.
CRU will execute its duties and functions after consultation by both USA research based advisory committees ( A ToR for CRU will be developed with the inputs of both parties). The proposed CRU will be functioned under the overall supervision of Director General of NBRO at locally. Further, CRU will be technically supervised by the Director, Human Settlements Division (HSD) of NBRO.
ADAPT_SL project
Since 2010, researchers from Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Energy and Environment (VIEE; USA) have partnered with the National Building Research Organization (NBRO; Sri Lanka) to examine the connection between agricultural adaptation and climate change in Mahaweli River Watershed, Sri Lanka. In general, VIEE faculty and students conduct research on issues related to energy and the environment, with a large focus on climate change and water use.
The ADAPT-SL project is a cornerstone of VIEE’s work. This project is funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) under a program that supports basic scientific work on water, sustainability and climate. This funding will support our work through 2017, although we anticipate seeking additional funding to extend the project beyond that.
